Dialectical Behavioural Therapy

DBT-Informed Interventions

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based approach designed to help individuals manage intense emotions, improve relationships, and develop healthier coping strategies. Originally developed to support those with Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD), DBT is also widely used to treat a range of mental health difficulties. At Oak Grove Psychology, our experienced psychologists draw on DBT principles in individual therapy sessions to help individuals build emotional resilience and lead a more balanced life.

What is DBT?

DBT combines elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with mindfulness and acceptance-based strategies. It helps individuals understand and regulate their emotions, tolerate distress, and navigate relationships more effectively. DBT focuses on four key areas:

  • Mindfulness – developing awareness of thoughts and emotions without judgment

  • Distress Tolerance – learning skills to cope with difficult emotions and crises

  • Emotional Regulation – managing intense feelings and reducing emotional reactivity

  • Interpersonal Effectiveness – improving communication and setting healthy boundaries

DBT-Informed Therapy can help with a range of issues, including:

·       Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD/BPD)

·       Self-harm and suicidal thoughts

·       Chronic feelings of emptiness or emotional distress

·       Depression and anxiety

·       Trauma and PTSD

·       Relationship difficulties

DBT-Informed Therapy Reading

At Oak Grove Psychology, our therapists are trained in DBT and integrate its principles into individual therapy sessions. While we do not offer a full DBT programme, we use DBT-informed techniques to help individuals develop practical skills for managing emotions, reducing distress, and improving relationships.
