Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterised by persistent, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours or rituals (compulsions) performed to reduce anxiety. OCD can be distressing and time-consuming, interfering with daily life, relationships, and overall wellbeing. Here at Oak Grove Psychology, our experienced psychologists provide evidence-based OCD therapy in Reading and across the UK, to help individuals manage and overcome OCD.
What is OCD?
OCD involves a cycle of distressing thoughts and compulsive behaviours. Obsessions are unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that create intense anxiety, while compulsions are repetitive actions or mental rituals performed to relieve distress. Although compulsions may provide temporary relief, they often reinforce the cycle of OCD, making symptoms worse over time.
The most common symptoms of OCD include:
Obsessive thoughts, or intrusive unwanted thoughts
Compulsive behaviours, including excessive handwashing, checking, counting, or repeating actions
A strong need for order and symmetry
Mental compulsions, including excessive rumination or repeating phrases silently
Avoidance of triggers, such as certain places or situations that provoke obsessive thoughts
Significant distress and anxiety when unable to complete compulsive behaviours
