Dr Alison Chivers
Counselling Psychologist; HCPC
I am a HCPC-registered Counselling Psychologist committed to supporting individuals in overcoming life’s challenges and enhancing their emotional well-being. With extensive experience in both NHS and private practice, I provide personalised, evidence-based therapy to help clients navigate a range of psychological difficulties.
I understand that taking the first step towards therapy can be difficult, and I strive to create a warm, non-judgemental, and collaborative environment where individuals feel safe to explore their thoughts and emotions. My approach is integrative, drawing from multiple therapeutic modalities to tailor therapy to each client’s unique needs and goals.
Areas of Expertise
I have extensive experience working with a variety of psychological concerns, including anxiety, stress, depression, low self-esteem, emotional regulation difficulties, and relationship challenges. I also have a specialist interest in working with psychosis and complex psychological trauma, helping individuals process their experiences and develop coping strategies.
Additionally, I support individuals who have experienced significant life transitions or who struggle with the long-term impact of past experiences. My approach is centred on fostering self-compassion and resilience, ensuring that clients feel heard and empowered in their journey towards healing.
Therapeutic Approaches
As an integrative practitioner, I draw upon a range of therapeutic models to suit each client’s specific needs. My main approaches include:
Relational Therapy – Focusing on the importance of relationships and interpersonal dynamics in shaping emotional experiences.
Psychodynamic Therapy – Exploring unconscious patterns and past experiences that may influence current behaviours and emotions.
Person-Centred Therapy – Creating a supportive and non-directive space for clients to explore their own solutions.
Systemic Therapy – Addressing relational patterns within families and social networks.
Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) – Developing self-compassion and reducing self-criticism to support emotional well-being.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) – A structured approach to processing trauma and distressing memories.
I work collaboratively with clients, ensuring that therapy is tailored to their needs, strengths, and aspirations. My goal is to support individuals in understanding their experiences, developing healthier coping strategies, and achieving meaningful change in their lives.

My Approach & Personal Background
My journey into psychology began through my early work with preschool children, which sparked my interest in understanding human behaviour and emotional well-being. After completing my Psychology degree, I worked in residential care with individuals experiencing complex mental health conditions and learning disabilities. This experience deepened my passion for trauma-informed care and led me to pursue further training in counselling and psychotherapy.
I am deeply committed to working with clients in an authentic and compassionate way, tailoring therapy to their individual needs rather than following a rigid model. I believe that therapy should be a collaborative and empowering process, where clients feel heard, valued, and supported.
Outside of my professional life, I am proud to be from a farming family in Gloucestershire. I enjoy yoga, swimming, and walking my two sprocker spaniels with my husband. I also love spending time with my adult children and meeting up with friends.
